A Travel Agent’s Guide Instagram Bios That Actually Gets Followed

Instagram Tips for Travel Agents

One of the biggest pieces of advice that stuck with me when I first started marketing on Instagram was from Jasmine Star, she would say that Instagram is like one big party.

You walk into the room and you start to mingle, talk about who you are and what you do (in a non-pressure, casual way) in hopes that you’ll find your people and become friends.

These days, Instagram very much feels like speed dating, but at 3x speed 💨. We’re scrolling so fast and are quick to pass over people until we see a piece of content that grabs our attention, and then within 3 seconds, we decide whether or not we’re going to follow or forget.

Did you see that, 3 SECONDS?!

While travel agents want more followers on Instagram, it’s time to get honest and decide if your profile is follow-worthy?

The truth is that your profile/bio has to do some heavy lifting, it’s not a place where you should just throw up a couple of words and call it a day, you have to write it with intention and strategy.

Stop = Get Found
Stay = Get Followed
Click = Get them to the Next Step

But first, let’s take a quick peek at what each piece of an Instagram Profile looks like.

Here’s something a lot of travel agents don’t realize… Instagram has its own search engine. Just like Google. People are literally typing things like “Italy vacations” or “honeymoon planner” into Instagram, and the platform is serving up profiles based on keywords.

If your profile doesn’t have the right ones? You’re invisible.

Where to put your keywords

Username: Keep it simple and recognizable. This would either be your name or travel agency name.

Name field: This is the most underused real estate on Instagram. It’s searchable. Don’t waste it by just typing your name again, especially if your @username is your name. This is where you want to put your niche, be specific, think about what people might be typing in the search bar.

  • Autism friendly vacations
  • Italy Honeymoon Specialist
  • European River Cruise Travel Agent

Bio: Sprinkle in your niche, your destinations, and your type of traveler. Be specific.

Cover photos, carousels, and on-screen text in your Reels: Yes, the text on your covers counts for SEO too.

Captions and hashtags (max 3): Use keywords naturally in your captions. And hashtags? They act as keywords now, just use 3 that are relevant to your content and you’re good to go!

Okay, so they found you. Now comes the big moment, will you get the follow?!

They’re going to check out your profile to decide. Here’s how to get them to stay.

But first, pleaseeee make sure your profile picture is of you! Unless you’re an agency with multiple agents using the same account, show your face.

Step 1: Choose clear over clever

I know, you want your bio to feel intelligent and unique and on-brand. But your bio is not the place to be cute or cryptic.

It needs to answer one question immediately: Who do you help and how?

Think: your niche, your destinations, your type of traveler.

“Travel advisor | Making dreams come true ✈️”

“Luxury honeymoon specialist helping couples plan stress-free trips to Europe and the Maldives”

Step 2: Pin your 3 most important posts

Think of your pinned posts as a little goodie bag for new visitors. They’re the first thing someone sees when they scroll your grid, so make them count.

Pin these three:

An intro post – who you are and what you do
Your process post – what it’s actually like to work with you
A lead magnet or your best tip – the thing that makes them say “I need to follow her”

These three alone can turn a curious visitor into a follower (and eventually a client). ✨

I even have a freebie to help!

Step 3: Make your grid scannable

Your grid doesn’t need to be perfectly curated and checkered. But it does need to be easy to scan, meaning at a quick glance, people can see what type of topics you talk about.

Your grid images should have titles. Also be sure to show your face from time to time. You don’t want your grid to look like a billboard of sales graphics or a curation of resort pics.

Yay!! You got the follow, the next thing is to move them off of Instagram. I know that sounds crazy because you worked so hard to get them to get you there BUT the key is to stay on top of mind, and we all know, not every account we follow shows up in our feeds.

Which is why having a link with a next step is crucial for building relationships with your followers.

What should you link?

  • Inquiry page
  • FAQ page about what it’s like to work with you
  • Facebook group
  • Lead Magnet
  • Email List sign up

And label your links.

Your CTA

This is the one your bio is probably missing. Tell them exactly what to do next.

A few examples:

  • “Top 5 private villas in Italy”
  • “Grab my Europe packing checklist below ⬇️”
  •  “exclusive group perks this way ⬇️”

Your bio isn’t a “set it and forget it” situation. Promoting a special offer? Update your CTA. Hosting a group trip? Mention it. Launched a new freebie? Plug it.

You can update your bio at any time!

If this little bio audit has you feeling ready to conquer Instagram and start taking it seriously, I’m so happy to give you that kick in the pants!!

But your bio is just one piece, you have to then create content that gets them coming back.

FAQ: Instagram Bios for Travel Agents

What should a travel agent put in their Instagram bio?

A travel agent’s Instagram bio should clearly state their niche (luxury honeymoons, family travel, autism-friendly vacations, etc.), the destinations they specialize in, the type of traveler they help, and a clear call to action. Skip vague phrases like “making dreams come true” and lead with specificity instead.

How do travel agents get found on Instagram?

Travel agents get found on Instagram by using searchable keywords in their name field, bio, captions, on-screen text in Reels, and hashtags. The name field is especially important because it’s indexed in Instagram search, just like a Google search bar.

What should travel agents pin to their Instagram profile?

Travel agents should pin three posts: an intro post (who you are and what you do), a process post (what it’s like to work with you), and a lead magnet or your best tip. These three pinned posts work like a goodie bag for new visitors and help turn profile visitors into followers.
