Growing Your Email List: How to Deliver Your Freebie

When you first decided to open your business, it probably went a little something like this:

  • Make an Instagram profile

  • DIY website

  • Signed up for MailChimp or another email provider

Then you sat back with a margarita and waited for the sales to roll in. Right?

Now that you’ve been in business for a while, how’s your email marketing going? Neglected? All good, no shaming here.

Growing an email list has been a trendy topic this year. More and more, online business owners are seeing the value of collecting emails and trying their best in staying consistent with email marketing.

No more battling algorithms, needing to show up on video or spending hours creating graphics each week.  You get to write emails in your pjs, while watching The Bear and drinking a glass of Pinot, and no one would ever know.

One of the keys to growing your email list is to create a resource that provides a quick win for your ideal client and builds your credibility. Then you continue to nurture them through your newsletters.

Pst, need some inspiration for what freebie to create, here’s a post to help you: 5 Freebie Ideas that aren’t PDFs

Once you have your freebie created and designed comes the next step in launching it, which brings me to the reason for this post…

How do you deliver your freebie to subscribers?

When it comes time for your subscriber to download the freebie, you have a few different options for what point they could access the file:

Confirmation Page - the page that the subscriber lands on after they’ve opted-in, with a button or link to download a file

Redirect Page - an outside link to download a file that the subscriber is sent to after they’ve opted-in

Thank You Email - an automated email that is sent after an opt-in is completed with a link to download a file

Let’s break down how to step up your freebie delivery.

Sharing Permission in Google Drive

  1. Upload your resource into Google Drive

  2. In the right corner, click Share

  3. Choose “anyone with the link can view”

  4. Copy the link

Automatic Download Using Google Drive

This is the option that allows your subscriber to get their freebie/resource right away.

How to: In your email provider, add a button and add the Google link.

Attach the File to the Email

In your email provider, add a button and upload the file so that it’s attached.
I would use caution when using this option IF you plan on updating the file at a later date.

This method would be great when you have a rock-solid resource. Otherwise, you’ll have to go back into the email and update the file each time it’s modified.

Now that I gave you my warning here’s the biggest benefit of this delivery method, you won’t have to worry about broken links or permission issues.

How to: In your email provider, add a button and upload the file so that it’s attached.

Automatic Download Using Redirect Page (using Flodesk)

In Flodesk, you’ll create a “Form” to make an opt-in for your resource. You’ll see a step asking what you’d like to do after a form is submitted.

The choices are “Display Success Message”  or “Redirect to a URL.”

How to: Paste in the Google share link and violá

Bonus tip: No matter which method you choose, always include the resource again in your Thank You email. That way the subscriber can easily access the file again.
