5 Free Content Writing Tools That Every Service Provider Needs to Bookmark

One of my toxic traits is that I love trying out new tech, I’m guilty of giving in to shiny object syndrome.

But there’s just something about playing around on a new platform and trying out the different features that make me happy. I’ve had some winners like when I moved from Asana to Click Up and then some fails like when I really tried to like Notion because it’s so pretty but can’t figure it out fully.

Lucky for you, I spend hours experimenting and I come back with the pros/cons.

Anyway, this blog is not about that exactly but through the past few years the sites that I love and can not write without.

I’ve found that so many service providers hate writing. It’s not always that they don’t know what to say it’s that we get stuck in our heads about how to write.

It’s like we’re still hearing our old college professors lecturing us on MLA formatting and not using complex sentences.

That takes the fun out of writing, doesn’t it?

No one wants to read a stuffy caption or blog post.

It’s okay to break the rules.

Let your personality shine through your content. Use emojis, slang, curse, bold, italicize, humor, short sentences, and run-on sentences. As long as it’s easy for your reader to digest and provides some kind of value, you’re good!

So open a Google Doc, start typing, and use my favorite tools to help you edit and tighten things up.

🧠 Need a brainstorming partner? Introducing Gemini - Google’s AI Tool

Gemini is Google’s AI tool that works just like ChatGPT. I honestly bounce between the two but I’ve found that with the prompts that I use, Gemini typically gives me better responses.

I use Gemini to help me with blog post ideas, meta descriptions, and reviewing my content to see what edits it would make. And honestly, it’s pretty spot on with calling out things that are unclear or suggesting a stronger opening or conclusion.

When it comes to AI, the key to getting the best and most relevant responses are the prompts.  You have to train the bots to understand who you are, who your ideal clients are and the services that you offer.

Then you have to instruct it who you need it to be…that sounds weird, so let me show you a prompt that I use at least ten times a week.

“Good Morning! I am writing a blog post about some of my favorite tools to use for writing content. Can you please act as a highly-skilled copywriter who specializes in blog writing and SEO to review this blog draft and make suggestions? (paste in blog).”

🐝 Didn’t win 1st prize at the spelling bee? Use the Grammarly Extension.

If I’m being honest, I have a love/hate relationship with Grammarly. Not because it doesn’t work well but because it makes me realize how bad of a speller I am. 😅

Grammarly is a plug-in that you can download to work on any site where you type, including Google, Gmail, ClickUp, etc. It will find your spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.

There is a paid version but the free version is just fine.

✄ Can’t seem to keep it short and sweet? Try Hemingway Editor for readability suggestions.

I heard about the Hemingway Editor on a podcast and finally tried it out a few weeks ago and I LOVE it!

Sometimes I go a little word crazy and Hemingway is a site that reviews your content and gives you editing suggestions.

It finds sentences that are hard to read/understand and points out if you should be using stronger words to strengthen your message, which is pretty cool.

Granted, this will try and make you chop up your longer sentences but use your judgment to see how you’d like your copy to flow.

🤩 Tired of using the same words over and over again? Related Words is there to save you!

Speaking of strengthening your messaging, Related Words is an amped-up thesaurus!

I love using this site to find new words to replace ones that are overused like “elevate.”

🔥 Need a headline that grabs attention? Bookmark CoSchedule

Sometimes the hardest part about writing is finding a sentence to use as a title to captures the attention of the reader to have them open up and keep reading.

CoSchedule is a fun site where you can test out your headlines to see how they score by evaluating it’s word count, clarity, sentiment, etc.

If you have a paid version, you can even see an SEO score, which is super handy!

Ready, set bookmark!

I hope that these tools help you uncover the amazing writer I know you are! Keep them all bookmarked because you’ll be using them again and again.

I’d love to hear about some tools that you love using in your business. Message me and let me know what they are!
